Temple of Bakungan - a Part of Bali History

The presence of Pura Bakungan in Gilimanuk Village, Melaya, Jembrana Regency can be used as a reminder for us not to lose our awareness in performing variety of policies in this life. The location where Bakungan Temple is located was also the location of Bakungan Kingdom. Its capital was located in the middle of Gilimanuk and it disappeared due to a very simple thing.

At the beginning of XIV century AD Bali was under the authority of Majapahit Kingdom in Java. At that time, Sri Aji Dalem Krsna Kepakisan was appointed as the first king for Bali; the capital of the kingdom is in Gianyar. In order to keep the area safe and to keep the royal order, Gajah Mada (prime minister of Majapahit Kingdom) assigned an Arya Klan from Pejarakan to rule in Jembrana, his name was Arya Malel Cengkong, a Hindu-Vishnu Murti follower.

After Arya Malel Cengkong getting old, he was replaced by his offspring I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pecangakan. He built a palace in an area where many storks live (Stork = Cangak); therefore, it is called Pecangakan. I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pecangakan was awarded with a white horse by Sri Aji Dalem Kepakisan.

Cengkong also build a palace for his second son I Gusti Ngurah Bakungan palace, it was built in the area around Cekik Bakungan Gilimanuk. Bakungan area is situated on the banks of the river a lot of growing daffodils (bakung). The third son of I Gusti Ngurah Agung Pancoran served as a symbol in the palace of Pecangakan.
This folklore was cited from Ni Ketut Sriasih in her writings about the function of Bakungan Temple (2001). Govern by both sisters, Jembrana region became prosperous. I Gusti Ngurah Bakungan was also keen to have a white horse that was given by Sri Aji Dalem Kepakisan.

After a while, I Gusti Ngurah Bakungan held a Dewa Yadya Ceremony (ceremony for Gods) and invited his brother, I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan. The invitation was done besides as a tradition, it also driven by I Gusti Ngurah Bakungan desire to see his brother. However, I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan became suspicious of his brother invitation as he is aware that his brother also keen to have the white horse from Daelem Kepakisan. Before attending the ceremony, I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan provided instructions for his youngest brother.

The contents of the message were if his white horse return to Pecangakan with blood on it means I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan having been killed in battle.
Then the member of the palace should also take their own life as proof of loyalty. All the palace treasure should be buried in the ground.
Furthermore, I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan headed to Bakungan Kingdom and he was greeted by his brother because the invitation was based on a sense of longing and sincerity as a brother to his older brother, there is absolutely no evil purpose in the invitation. During the ceremony, the people of Bakungan killed various kinds of animals for offering in the ceremony.

The white horse carried by I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan was frightened by the animal’s killing. The horse was afraid that it will also be killed. The horse that was kept out in a cage ran around the palace in frightened state. During its attempt to escape, the white horse run into the meat of the animals that were killed recently and still full of blood. Due to this, its body was soaked by fresh animal blood. The horse kept running back to Pecangakan. Obeying I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan, the female member of the palace decided to end their life.

The youngest brother buried the palace’s treasure and led his army to attack Bakungan. Hence, arose a misunderstanding between the I Gusti Ngurah Pecangakan with his brother, Ngurah Bakungan. They entered in a duel that never ends as they are equally powerful. At the end, the brothers begged the Gods so that their life could be taken away, then both of them disappeared.

To commemorate the life of the two brothers, their descendants built the Bakungan Temple in order to place the holy spirit of King Bakungan with a temple in the northeast corner of Temple Bakungan inner area. While in the temple in the northwest area was built for the King of Pecangakan. Therefore many Hindu worshippers pray in the Bakungan Temple for their safey.
